09/26/2007 - Süd-Chemie grants young scientist award for outstanding research to scientist of Technical University of Munich

In special recognition of his scientific achievements to date, Dr. Vladimir Zverlov from the Institute for Microbiology of Technical University of Munich in Freising-Weihenstephan has been awarded the Süd-Chemie Liebig Medal along with 10,000 euros. Dr. Hans Jürgen Wernicke, Deputy Chairman of the Managing Board of Süd-Chemie AG, granted the award to Dr. Zverlov at Süd-Chemie's Defining the Future Conference for Catalytic Technology at the German Museum (Deutsches Museum) in Munich yesterday. The award bi-annually honors up-and-coming scientists for their outstanding research.

Dr. Zverlov receives the award for his work dedicated to the investigation of so called cellulases. For more than ten years, he has been among the leading scientists worldwide in this field and authored and co-authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals. His research in the field of bio-catalytic biomass conversion is especially interesting for industrial use in the so called white biotechnology. This field offers enormous future potential including cutting raw material consumption or raising efficiency for example in the conversion of renewable raw materials such as biomass into biofuels or valuable base chemicals.

Dr. Hans Jürgen Wernicke, Deputy Chairman of the Managing Board of Süd-Chemie AG said: "On behalf of the Managing Board of Süd-Chemie, I wish to sincerely congratulate Dr. Zverlov to this award. With the Süd-Chemie Liebig Medal, we follow the tradition of Süd-Chemie‘s co-founder, the famous chemist Justus von Liebig. Thus we honor outstanding research yielding great potential for future technical applications. We are convinced that Dr. Zverlov‘s work will contribute to shape the future in the highly attractive area of biomass conversion into modern biofuels and base chemicals, an area which is also of increasing interest to Süd-Chemie."
