08/27/2007 - Süd-Chemie donates water treatment plant as emergency aid for earthquake victims in Peru

Süd-Chemie AG, Munich is donating a mobile water treatment plant to provide supplies of drinking water directly to the victims of the earthquake in Peru.

The week before last, Peru was shaken by the strongest earthquake for more than thirty years, as a result of which more than 500 people lost their lives and some 34,000 houses were destroyed. Although the situation is meanwhile somewhat calmer, supplying the population with clean drinking water is still one of the major problems in the disaster area.

Süd-Chemie has therefore decided to donate a mobile Aquacube water treatment plant for the earthquake victims in Peru. Being mobile, the plant can be transported to the relevant crisis area, where it will transform some 1,500 litres of water per hour into clean drinking water at the required location. Tomorrow, the plant is to be shipped from Süd-Chemie‘s Johannesburg works in South Africa to Lima, Peru, and will arrive in the disaster area no later than the end of the week. In addition, Süd-Chemie water treatment specialists will be travelling to Peru from South Africa to set up the plant together with Süd-Chemie´s Peruvian employees and ensure smooth on-site operations.

"Since drinking water supplies are still not operational in many parts of the affected region, providing clean drinking water to the earthquake victims in Peru currently has top priority. As a company involved in the treatment of industrial and drinking water, especially in emerging economies, it is obvious to us that in this situation, the population must be given fast and unbureaucratic assistance with the purification of drinking water. After the tsunami in Southeast Asia at the beginning of 2005 and hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in mid-2005, we also provided humanitarian aid of this kind," said Dr. Hans Jürgen Wernicke, Deputy Managing Board Chairman at Süd-Chemie AG.
