04/26/2007 - Süd-Chemie takes over majority share in Malaysian potable and waste water treatment specialist

Süd-Chemie AG, based in Munich, has taken over a 55% share in Chemindus SDN BHD, Selangor, Malaysia, with a view to expanding its activities in the South-East Asian market for potable and waste water treatment. At the same time, Süd-Chemie is to acquire patented technology for the manufacture of coagulants and flocculants from Chemindus, i.e. chemicals used to process water. It was agreed that no details of the purchase price would be disclosed.

Chemindus is one of Malaysia's leading suppliers of coagulants and flocculants. Based on a patented technology, Chemindus produces mainly polyaluminium chloride (PAC). PAC is used to treat water in potable and industrial waste water treatment plants. Süd-Chemie´s partners in Chemindus are Hydrovest, the Malaysian drinking-water utility company, and the previous majority owner, Mr. Tan Swee Hua.

This transaction represents a major strategic step towards expanding the Water Treatment Business Unit in South-East Asia. Up until now, this Business Unit, which offers products and solutions for purifying potable water and effluent, as well as for recirculated industrial process water, has focused its activities mainly in Europe, Africa and South America.

Dr. Hans Jürgen Wernicke, Deputy Chairman of the Süd-Chemie AG Managing Board said: "The rapidly-growing market for the treatment of potable water and industrial effluents in South-East Asia offers considerable growth opportunities for our Water Treatment Business Unit. By acquiring a majority share in Chemindus, a well-established specialist in the field of waste water treatment, we have not only gained access to the promising market for water-treatment chemicals in Malaysia, but also created a basis for ongoing expansion of our business throughout South-East Asia."
