Today, Süd-Chemie AG, a leading global producer of catalysts for the chemicals, petrochemicals and refinery industry, has started the building of a new production facility in Qatar. The plant will manufacture high technology catalysts for Gas-to-Liquid as well as chemical and petrochemical processes. In Gas-to-Liquid technologies, natural gas is converted into liquid fuels and other highly valuable petrochemical products. The start of catalyst production at the Süd-Chemie plant is scheduled for the 2nd half of 2007.

In a solemn Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony held today at Mesaieed, Qatar’s center of chemical and petrochemical industries, many high-ranking persons of Qatari society and economy and Süd-Chemie were present.

Dr. Günter von Au, Chairman of the Managing Board of Süd-Chemie, said: “We are highly dignified and grateful to be here! Qatar is one of the most exciting economies in the Arab world. As the owner of the third largest natural gas reserve in the world, Qatar is a pioneer in Gas-to-Liquid technologies. This is one of the key technologies of this millennium and one of the key upcoming markets for the energies and chemicals industry. Based on a gigantic investment volume of some 75 billion US$, Gas-to-Liquid refineries, Petrochemical and Chemical Down-Stream projects are scheduled to be erected in Qatar by 2015. Süd-Chemie is proud to be part of this exciting development.
