The production of diols (bi-functional alcohols) is based either on direct hydrogenation of the corresponding anhydrides in the gas phase, or on hydrogenation of the methyl esters of the respective acids in the gas phase , or in the liquid phase. The hydrogenation is carried out in fixed-bed reactors.
