06/10/2005 - JEDEC/IPC TO RELEASE REVISION REQUIRING USE OF NEW, QUALITY TESTED HUMIDITY INDICATOR CARD IN THE DRY PACKING OF SEMICONDUCTORS

J-STD-033B incorporates Süd-Chemie’s proposed quality test method for determining the accuracy of color change humidity indicator cards

COLTON, CALIFORNIA (June 2, 2005) – The Joint Electronic Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) and IPC will soon release a new revision of J-STD-033, the standard governing the use and testing of humidity indicator (HI) cards in the dry packaging of semiconductors. The revised standard incorporates the use of an entirely new card with quality testing requirements designed to ensure accuracy and readability of the HI card during the dry packing process.

Because of its commitment to ensuring the integrity of humidity indicator products, Süd-Chemie Performance Packaging was the driving force behind the development of the new HI card requirements in the J-STD-033B revisions, creating the test method and playing an advisory role in the entire process.

The new JEDEC-approved cards, now available from Süd-Chemie, incorporate the following changes:

1) Cards must adhere to a standard, minimum color-change quality level to ensure accuracy and readability between dry and humid states:

HI card manufacturers will be required to test their cards for accuracy using a colorimeter device and be required to provide a test report to the customer certifying that the HI card meets quality requirements. The Color Meter Test Method, developed by Süd-Chemie, quantitatively determines the accuracy of color change HI cards. The levels, as outlined in the J-STD-033B revision, require a , perceptible change in color” between noted humidity levels.

2) Cards must now indicate humidity levels for MSL 2 Parts, in addition to MSL 2a to 5a:

Whereas previous cards used a 5, 10 and 15 percent relative humidity spot system to indicate humidity exposure levels for moisture sensitive components, the new HI cards will now feature spots indicating 5, 10 and 60 percent. The change means that cards will now indicate humidity exposure for Level 2 MSL devices. Additionally, a positive reading on the 60 percent spot indicates that cards should not be re-used, as the high levels of humidity to which the card has been exposed will jeopardize the accuracy of low (5%RH) readings.

Süd-Chemie’s new HI cards, which meet all requirements of J-STD-033B, do not require special labeling and are acceptable for use in the European Union. Its J-STD-033A cards will continue to be available.

Süd-Chemie will display the new J-STD-033B-compliant HI card at the Semicon West trade show in San Francisco, California, June 12 to 14, 2005, at Booth 9305. Product experts will be available to answer questions about the new card, as well as the new revision. Also on display will be Süd-Chemie’s full line of desiccants and other dry packing solutions for the semiconductor industry.
