Catalytic Combustors for Wood-Burning Appliances

Maintenance & Trouble Shooting

The Effect of Age on Performance. The activity of a catalyst in a new combustor is initially high, but this activity drops rapidly during the first 100 hours of operation. From this point on, the catalyst degrades at a very slow rate.

The combustor is designed to operate at a relatively stable activity level. This is why it's important, when comparing combustors of different designs or manufacture, to make the comparison over long periods of time. Differences in catalyst activity of Combustor A versus Combustor B won't be detected until after long duration testing. But as you can see, the catalyst life of B is twice that of A. The Süd Chemie Prototech Catalytic Combustor is designed to provide long-term catalytic activity.

Combustor Maintenance

Because continuous thermal self-cleaning action takes place within a combustor, very little additional maintenance is required or necessary. If ash collects on the face of a combustor, we recommend it be removed with a soft fiber brush or low-pressure compressed air. The internal channels should never be cleaned with any type of instrument, since this might result in the loss of catalyst material from the surface of the channel walls.

Stove Maintenance

A combustor requires little maintenance, but that doesn't mean the maintenance of the entire stove can be ignored. Although the Süd Chemie Prototech Catalytic Combustor greatly reduces the materials that cause creosote, operators should be told that continued periodic inspection and maintenance of the entire wood burning system, including the chimney is essential.
