On principal CERATOSIL®-qualities (0.15% - 8.5%) were used for the following main reasons and advantages:
Stabilisation
as well as before and after firing ceramic masses to technical ceramic bodies, big floor tiles and roof tiles, in fine ceramics and in glazes or engobes by
Increase of green strength
Increase of crushing strength and bending strength
Increase of dry bending strength and dry flex strength
By using mainly calcium bentonites (4 - 8%), the eutectical temperatures are remarkably decreasing. In the production of insulators, e.g. CERATOSIL® is used as fluxing agent and therefore there is a decrease of approximately 140˚ C.
CERATOSIL® is also used as plasticizing agent in ceramic mixtures like steatit white ware; the amount to be added is in between 0.15% up to 7.5%, depending on the specific additives in the porcelain and ceramic ware.
In production of coloured glazes and enamels for instance CERATOSIL® is used as antisettling agent and also as mediator between the ceramic ground material / white ware and the engobes and glazes.
